Bycatch rates in fisheries largely driven by variation in individual vessel behaviour

چکیده
Fisheries bycatch continues to drive the decline of many threatened marine species such as seabirds, sharks, mammals and sea turtles. Management frameworks typically address incidental catch with fleet-level controls on fishing. Yet, individual operators differ in their fishing practices efficiency at catching fish. If have differing abilities target, they should also avoid bycatch. We analysed variations among from five industrial fisheries representing different geographic areas, gear types target species. The vessel is a significant predictor for 15 16 cases, including that represent high or low costs fishers economic value potentially targeted byproducts. Encouragingly, we found high-target low-bycatch all sectors, gears known mortality worldwide. These results show there untapped opportunity reduce negative environmental impacts interventions targeting specific performance groups individuals, supporting an alternative perspective towards managing global fisheries. Modeling spatial patterns in fisheries bycatch: improving bycatch maps to aid fisheries management.
Fisheries bycatch, or incidental take, of large vertebrates such as sea turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals, is a pressing conservation and fisheries management issue. Identifying spatial patterns of bycatch is an important element in managing and mitigating bycatch occurrences. Because bycatch of these taxa involves rare events and fishing effort is highly variable in space and time, maps of...
متن کاملAddressing fisheries bycatch in a changing world
Fisheries bycatch is a threat to species of marine megafauna across the world’s oceans. Work over the past several decades has greatly advanced our understanding of the species affected, the magnitude and the spatial extent of bycatch. In the same time period, there have been substantial advances in the development of mitigation strategies and best practices to reduce bycatch. In this paper, we...
متن کاملMarine reserves solve an important bycatch problem in fisheries.
Management of the diverse fisheries of the world has had mixed success. While managing single species in data-rich environments has been largely effective, perhaps the greatest challenge facing fishery managers is how to deal with mixed stocks of fish with a range of life histories that reside in the same location. Because many fishing gears are nonselective, and the costs of making gear select...
متن کاملVariation in the Human Immune System Is Largely Driven by Non-Heritable Influences
There is considerable heterogeneity in immunological parameters between individuals, but its sources are largely unknown. To assess the relative contribution of heritable versus non-heritable factors, we have performed a systems-level analysis of 210 healthy twins between 8 and 82 years of age. We measured 204 different parameters, including cell population frequencies, cytokine responses, and ...
